As the count on the final votes come in from the national elections it grows more apparent the Candidate Hillary Clinton beat President-elect Donald Trump by more than 2.5 million votes. That number is equivalent to the total populations of South and North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The outcome of the presidential race was determined by the Electoral College and not the people. It is a simple as that. We are living under an archaic system of voting that should have been shelved 150 years ago. It was a system put in place because the elite politicians in the 1780s were weary of allowing the mostly uneducated masses of Americans have an independent voice in running the government of the United States.

For those who would argue that it gives small states like South Dakota a voice they would not have otherwise we say hogwash. Few candidates for the office of the President of the United States ever come to South Dakota to seek our votes. We are a “fly over state” with only four electoral votes and those four votes wouldn’t make a pimple on an elephant’s butt.
