Standing Rock Sioux Tribe enters election season with crowded field

It's election season for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

Ten candidates are running for chairman, The Bismarck Tribune reports. Included is incumbent Dave Archambault II, who told the paper he hadn't planned to seek re-election.

“I can’t say I’ll fix everything, but I hope to bump it in a new direction,” Archambault told the paper.

Other candidates are: Jerl Thompson, Kevin Iron Road, Courtney Yellow Fat,Archie Fool Bear, Donel Takes the Gun, Kimberlynn Cameron, Mike Faith, Jon Eagle and Chad Harrison. Several spoke with The Tribune and said the #NoDAPL movement helped build awareness of tribal issues.

The primary takes place July 19. The top two candidates will advance to the general election in September.

The tribe's reservation straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
