Indigenous woman gains backing in bid for presidency in Mexico

An indigenous woman is running for president of Mexico for the first time in the nation's history.

Maria de Jesus Patricio Martinez is a traditional doctor from a Nahua community, according to news reports. She was chosen to run for president by the National Indigenous Congress during a meeting on Sunday.

The National Indigenous Congress is an independent group that represents dozens of indigenous communities across Mexico. It may need to petition to put Patricio Martinez on the ballot in 2018, according to the Associated Press.
