Tribal lobbyist running on pro-Trump agenda for seat in North Carolina

A well-known tribal lobbyist is seeking the Republican nomination for a U.S. Congressional seat in North Carolina.

Scott Dacey, a commissioner in Craven County, is running on a pro-Trump agenda, The Elizabeth City Daily Advance reported. He is portraying Rep. Walter Jones (R-North Carolina), the incumbent, as insufficiently conservative by linking him to Democrats like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-California), the minority leader in the House.

“Jones voted with Pelosi against your tax cut,” Dacey's first television ad states, The Intercept reported.

The message appears to be carrying weight. Dacey continues to out-raise Jones, The Elizabeth City Daily Advance reported, although the incumbent has more money on hand to spend.

According to The Intercept, Dacey splits his time between North Carolina and Washington, D.C., where he is the sole owner of Dacey Public Affairs, a public affairs firm, according to a financial disclosure form posted by the site. He also holds a 33 percent interest in PACE, a "bipartisan government relations" firm.

"Professionally, I have worked in Washington, DC and throughout Indian Country to assist Native American tribal governments in protecting their lands, their property rights and the rights of their members from the ongoing intrusion of the federal government into their local affairs," Dacey told The New Bern Sun Journal in response to a questionnaire.

Past clients have included the Morongo Band of Mission Indians from California, the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, based in Arizona. Morongo and Salt River are among Dacey's biggest donors, The Intercept reported.

Jones has served 12 terms in Congress and is promising his next would be his last. He does not have much of a record on Indian issues though he once advocated against legislative recognition for the Lumbee Tribe, Naitonal Public Radio reported.

He also wrote a letter of support for David Safavian, who was convicted for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal. Safavian, incidentally, was a tribal lobbyist before he joined the George W. Bush administration.
