Southern Ute elder Sage Remington passes on at the age of 76

Sage Douglas Remington, an elder from the Southern Ute Tribe known for his political and cultural activism, died on July 31. He was 76.

Remington helped create the Southern Ute Grassroots Organization to advocate for the needs of tribal citizens. He often clashed with elected tribal leaders his work ended up improving a water rights settlement in Colorado, The Southern Ute Drum reported.

“He was a visionary,” Arlene Millich, a lifelong friend, told The Durango Herald.

Remington's work extended beyond his community. He co-founded the Colorado Two Spirit Society, took part in the occupation at Alcatraz and advocated for the Native vote long before the term became widespread across Indian Country.

Remington, who was a fluent speaker of the Ute language, was laid to rest on the reservation on Saturday, August 4.
