Ohkay Owingeh father murdered in apparent road rage incident

A non-Indian man has been charged in connection with an apparent road rage incident at Ohkay Owingeh in northern New Mexico.

According to an FBI agent's affidavit filed in federal court on Thursday, Dennis Velasquez, Jr., shot and killed the victim on January 5. The incident occurred following an altercation near the Ohkay Travel Center, which is located along a busy highway that runs through the reservation.

The affidavit described the victim only by his surname "Glock" and his initials "P.G." But his son identified him on social media as Phillip Glock, who was a 53-year-old citizen of Ohkay Owingeh.

"Dad, I I love U so much and will miss U so much," Glock's son said in the post on the evening of January 5. "I can't believe this happen to U."

In an affidavit filed in federal court, FBI Agent Michelle A. Cobb describes how she used evidence from a cell phone, along with information provided by a witness, to track down Dennis Velasquez, Jr., who is accused of murder at Ohkay Owingeh in northern New Mexico.

According to the FBI affidavit, Glock was driving his pickup truck along with two of his other children -- ages 12 and 10 -- at the time of the incident. He was shot after he exited his truck to confront another vehicle, one in which Velasquez was a passenger.

The second vehicle was being driven by Velasquez's father, according to the affidavit. His mother was also a passenger.

When interviewed by the FBI agent, Velasquez's father said his son "didn't shoot to kill the man, but wanted to scare him."

Though both of Velasquez's parents acknowledged being in the car and witnessing the shooting, they admitted they drove away from the scene. His father said it was because he didn't have a phone to call 911, adding that he "didn't trust Indian cops."

The family instead drove back to their home in Gallina, about 57 miles north of the Ohkay Travel Center. That's where Velasquez, who is non-Indian, was arrested, according to news reports.

Velasquez made his initial court appearance in Albuquerque on Thursday. He has been appointed a public defender, according to a record from the proceeding.

Velasquez has been charged with one count of murder, with one count of discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence and with one violation of the General Crimes Act.
