Tim Giago: We'll get over the wall. Will we get over Donald Trump?

Notes from Indian Country
Getting over the wall
By Tim Giago (Nanwica Kciji – Stands Up for Them)

It is Sunday morning and for an hour I sat looking at the blank screen of my computer. I couldn’t get my mind to kick in. I had a dozen stories floating around in my head yesterday, but today it seems they have all vanished.

I finally started to think about all of those people sitting in their churches, reading their Bibles, listening to sermons, and singing hymns. That’s right, the book they are reading is the Bible. That book has chapter and verse of all the things that are sinful and the 10 Commandments are at the top of the way they, the Christians, should lead their lives.

Is there something in the Bible that addresses the topic of lying? Never in the history of America has there been anyone like a Donald J. Trump, who lies with every other sentence. Why aren’t these church-going, Bible thumping Christians speaking up about that?

Trump is following in the footsteps of people everyone should fear. People like Josef Stalin, Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler all had one thing in common. If you lie loud enough and often enough before long those lies will be accepted as truth, of if not, they will be so meaningless as to be acceptable. I’ve actually heard Trump supporters say, “Oh, I know he lies, but he has done so many great things that it really doesn’t matter.”

“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.” Trump used a more vulgar term when he spoke about a woman he wanted to have sex with, but added “She was married.”

“Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Not only did Trump have sex with Stormy Daniels, but he did it while his wife, Melania, was pregnant.

My question is, how can people sit in church and read their Bibles knowing full well that the man they elected to serve as President of the United States has maliciously violated all of the morals and principles they once regarded as sacred? And knowing all of this, still support him?

All of South Dakota’s national legislators are in Washington looking high and low to see if they can find their backbones. Everything Trump does to diminish or tarnish how our allies look upon us no longer matters to our elected officials and in the long run they are totally complicit in any catastrophe he brings upon this Nation.

America was never great about how it treated its ethnic minorities. Genocide and slavery were always acceptable under the Constitution. But over the years there has been some progress in closing the social gaps until the dog whistles of Trump and his henchmen began to make it acceptable again.

In the 2016 election white people began to fear, for the first time, the challenges that they were about to face from the ethnic minorities. They organized and got behind a man they believed would reflect their own biases and made him president. It was a phenomenon that will never happen again because those minorities once so feared will soon be in the majority and what is more they will be organized and united.

Not all white people felt that way and in the mid-term elections, acknowledging that some oversight was needed, they voted in 40 new members to the House of Representatives to achieve that goal.

Trump is now insanely pursuing a campaign promise based on a lie, the Trump Wall. The wall was going to be his crowning glory, but instead it collapsed on him like bags of sand.

Oh, we’ll get over the wall, no pun intended, and get back to doing the things that are important to the future of this country, but until Trump is drummed out of office, all of us must remain eternally vigilant.
