Clara Caufield: Thank you for welcoming back this Cheyenne 'blabbermouth'

Thanks good folks for welcoming me back

It was such a nice surprise to read in a recent edition of the Native Sun News Today that some folks were “glad to see me back.” Thank you so much.

As scribblers we take it upon ourselves to send thoughts and sometimes crazy out-of-the-world ideas into the universe, wondering often if anyone notices or cares. Thus, it is absolutely wonderful to realize that a few people do.

Recently, having taking a two year break from cyberspace, I waded through some 12,000 old emails, mostly junk, but found some treasures. That included several from folks in England, Spain and even Ireland, apparently readers of NSNT, who somehow think I am an expert on the Northern Cheyenne.

Let me say, I am NOT, just a blabbermouth about that. But, as a student of our people and history, I know a little bit, but also know enough to refer these curious people to other experts such as my good friends and mentors, Dr. Richard Littlebear, president of Chief Dull Knife College; my wonderful friend and language coach, Mina Seminole; our recently re-elected tribal vice-president Windfield Russell; and our out-going vice-president Conrad Fisher, who is my same age and much more knowledgeable than me about tribal tradition

Recently, after a wonderful conversation with him, I encouraged Conrad to write a book, him knowing the old stories such as the "short-nosed bear" in a familiar way, passed down from many elders.

Also recently, I visited with a young couple, a cowboy from Sheridan who had some Crow rodeo buddies and his younger good looking white girl friend who grew up somewhere else. The subject turned to reservations, nearby and Crow Fair, a widely known Montana Indian event, the "Tipi Capital of the World."
