American Indian Movement co-founder Clyde Bellecourt: 'My spirit will be leading the charge'

American Indian Movement co-founder Clyde Bellecourt, a citizen of the White Earth Nation, is battling stage 4 prostate cancer.

Bellecourt, 82, has lost a significant amount, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. But the well-known activist remains committed to Indian Country's causes, including the fight against racist imagery in sports.

“I’ll be there, and even if I’m not there, I’ll be there,” Bellecourt told the paper when he learned the Washington NFL team, whose name and mascot have been under scrutiny for decades, will be playing in Minnesota this season “My spirit will be leading the charge.”

Prostate cancer is treatable but not curable, according to the Mayo Clinic. Bellecourt has been undergoing treatment and his medical costs run "upwards of $3,000 a month," according to a GoFundMe set up by Joe Morales.
