A five-year-old girl from the
Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe died after being swept away in a creek on the reservation in South Dakota.
According to news reports, the girl went missing on Tuesday. Her body was recovered on Wednesday.
"My heart is with the family that is suffering from the loss of a love one and I ask for privacy of the family during this difficult time,"
Chairman Harold Frazier said in a statement on Thursday.
According to
KOTA TV, water levels in Cherry Creek, which feeds into the Cheyenne River, have been running higher than normal. The river is about twice as deep as normal, the station said.
The West River Eagle also reported that the creek has been "running high with strong currents due to recent heavy rains and flooding."
Frazier
declared an emergency on the reservation in March after severe storms. He did the same in late May
following more storms that damaged infrastructure on the reservation.
Chairman Frazier's full statement follow:
Yesterday tragedy struck a village on our reservation when a young tribal member was reported missing. The family of the missing, the community of Cherry Creek, numerous tribal agencies immediately began emergency search operations which continued around the clock. I would like to commend the volunteers and tribal agencies that never gave up and searched tirelessly through the night.
Early this morning our efforts were joined by outside agencies that responded quickly to our requests. I would like to personally thank the South Dakota Governor’s office, the South Dakota State Game, Fish and Parks, Oscar Ramirez and the Federal Bureau of Investigations for their response.
My heart is with the family that is suffering from the loss of a love one and I ask for privacy of the family during this difficult time.
