ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -- "Only the elected leaders can speak on behalf of Indian Country," Shaun Chapoose, a council member for the Ute Tribe, tells Indianz.Com as he runs for president of the National Congress of American Indians, the largest inter-tribal advocacy organization in the United States.

The winning candidates will be sworn in on Friday, the final day of the convention.
