Tim Giago: What does the Bible say about ‘lying?’

Notes from Indian Country
What does the Bible say about ‘lying?’

One lies and the others swear to it. That is the definite MO of the Trump Administration.

After top Iranian general Qassim Soleimani was killed everyone in Trump’s cabinet and administration scrambled to find a way to agree with Trump’s lies. In the end they told so many different lies that each one contradicted the other. News reporters couldn’t keep up with all of the lies so they just shrugged and often laughed at the childish and ridiculous claims of the Trumpies.

Two of his former press secretaries got so embarrassed by having to cover up his lies that they eventually resigned and now his administration does not hold press meetings.

"Soleimani was, in fact, planning 'imminent attacks.' While Democrats and the media quibble over its definition, quick point: When Obama killed bin Laden, al-Awlaki and Gaddafi, without Congressional approval, there were NO 'imminent attacks' and Democrats did not ask or care," said Hogan Gidley Trump's deputy assistant and principal deputy press secretary. Of course that was also a blatant lie since Obama had nothing to do with the death of Gaddafi.

Believe it or not there are even some Evangelical’s starting to wake up to the corruption and danger in Trump’s regime. In a harshly worded editorial, the editor of Christianity Today, the evangelical magazine founded by Billy Graham, called for President Trump to be removed from office. It viewed the evidence from the House impeachment hearings as having made a clear case that Mr. Trump had abused his office for personal gain and violated the Constitution. The editor of the piece, Mark Galli, was immediately attacked by Trump and his sycophants as a liar with no journalistic standing.

But the fact that one Evangelical magazine had the audacity to call out Trump for what he is showed that there are no some cracks starting to show in the ranks of his Evangelical supporters.

Trump was encouraged by some of his GOP flunkies to kill the Iranian general in order to take the focus off of his impending impeachment hearing about to take place in the Senate. I for one am a little surprised that former vice president Joe Biden has not reacted more strongly to the fact that Trump attempted to dig up dirt on him and his son Hunter in an effort to use it against Biden in the upcoming campaign. If I was advising Biden I would suggest that he show a picture of all the Democrats running for president as they stand on the debate stage and say, “Which one of these candidates does Donald Trump feat the most?” And then have the camera zoom in on himself. Now that would be a powerful and effective ad.

Trump has used the office of President of the United States to go after his political opponents before. Even after he was elected to office he still tried to justify his lies against Hillary Clinton by demanding that his Attorney General Bill Barr continue to investigate her. This week she was cleared of all charges and inferences after more than two years of GOP harassment. Bill Barr is a disgrace to the office of Attorney General and more than 2,400 members of New York’s State Bar have called for him to resign. Even the former Attorney General Eric Holder has said that Barr is not qualified to hold such an office.

Investigations against Trump that were ongoing have been quietly quashed by Barr in his efforts to protect him. The Justice Department used to be a separate branch of the Government.

If Donald Trump survives the efforts to impeach him he will certainly use the fake trial by the U. S. Senate to claim that he has been “exonerated.” It will be all over his campaign advertising. And I think that like many South Dakotans I wonder how our elected Congressman and Senators from South Dakota, all Republicans, can sleep at night after their complicity with such a corrupt man. The sad thing is that these sycophants will never lose their seats in such a Red State.

Many of us who have followed American politics over these many years are in a state of anxiety. We wake up in the morning wondering if Trump has got us into another war yet or we wonder who else this man has viciously savaged with his rants and tweets. Thank goodness he has been so busy defending himself that he has not had the time to focus on one of his other enemies, the Indian Nations. That will all change if he is re-elected.

The 2020 election is probably the most important election of our times and it is one that we cannot avoid. Get out and register to vote.
