Navajo Nation honors fallen warriors and military families with Navajo Nation Gold Star Families Day proclamation
WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer honor the lives and sacrifices of all fallen warriors and their families with a proclamation, which recognizes Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020 as “Navajo Nation Gold Star Families Day,” held in conjunction with National Gold Star Mother’s Day. The Navajo Nation designates the last Sunday in September each year, to recognize the families of fallen military men and women.
“Today, we pay special tribute to all of the men and women who have served in every branch of the Armed Forces and given their lives for our country, and we honor and recognize their families for the sacrifices they make. There are countless mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and others who have lost a loved one serving our country, including our Diné warriors. For them, we offer our condolences and prayers for strength and comfort as we grieve together and remember all of the contributions of our military families. We have many Diné men and women who continue to serve in the Armed Forces around the world. We ask the Creator to watch over them and to eventually bring them home safely to their loved ones,” said President Nez.
On June 23, 1936, Congress also designated the last Sunday in September as “Gold Star Mother’s Day” through Senate Joint Resolution 115.
“To lose a loved one in military service is very devastating for their families, but it is important that we come together to show our love and support for one another to help ease the heartache and build strength for our Diné families. We will never know the extent of their experiences and sacrifices, but we can take comfort in knowing that our military men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice are now with our Creator, free from any burden or hardship. Please join with us today, to offer prayers for our Gold Star Families,” said Vice President Lizer.
