Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland addresses the National Congress of American Indians on February 14, 2022.

Newland oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Indian Education, both agencies at the Department of the Interior. He is a citizen of the Bay Mills Indian Community, where he previously served as president.

Newland spoke during NCAI’s executive council winter session, which took place virtually due to COVID-19. He took questions from participants following his remarks.

“It’s been an intense and challenging year,” Newland said of his work in the administration of President Joe Biden.

Serving as moderator of the discussion is Governor Stephen Roe Lewis of the Gila River Indian Community. He is the recently-elected Secretary of NCAI.
