Letter: Leave the Narragansett Tribe alone!

Although not a tribal member, I was still shocked to read The Day's article, which illustrated how the Narragansetts were punished by the Rhode Island state police for opening a smoke shop and selling tax-free cigarettes on their federally-owned land.

I too am not a tribal member but have to voice my very strong and loud objection to the type of treatment our Native friends are recieving. They are trying to make a living and take care of their own just like any other person would. This country allows all types of nationalities, religions, etc., to own businesses, practice freedom of religion, etc. Foreigners are given tax breaks, medical assistance, welfare help, housing, and the list goes on and on. When it comes to our Native Americans they are treated as less then citizens...and as far as I am concerned they are the true Americans...they were here first...and will be here last...it is a shame that the state of Rhode Island has chosen this route...I lived there for three years and have never seen such a bigoted or racial state...and I am glad I moved out of it.
If there is any real justice in this world it will be served over this confrontation...the Native Americans have the right to live, love, and breathe the same as the rest of us....I just wonder when this country is going to realize that?
Sincerely
