Letter: Let the Indians make money

"The events that occurred on July 14 between the Narragansett Indians and the state of Rhode Island left me speechless. The purpose of the reservation in Charlestown is to provide for an economically self-sufficient place of residence for members of the Narragansett tribe. Congress has passed many acts regarding the area of self-determination for American Indians. The purpose of these acts was to allow Indians to enjoy a standard of living from their efforts comparable to that enjoyed by non-Indians in neighboring communities. This is what the Narragansetts have been trying to accomplish. The Rhode Island legislature has been impeding the Narragansetts' progress."
