July 29, 2003Narragansett chief supports federal probe of raidNarragansett chief sachem Matthew Thomas said a federal probe of the July 14 raid of the tribe's smoke shop is needed because Gov. Donald Carcieri's commission doesn't include experts on Indian law. Thomas said the tribe has more "faith" that the Department of Justice would do a better job. Carcieri's panel was named late last week and includes a college president, a rabbi, a retired judge, a retired Navy admiral and a reverend.
