July 31, 2003Opinion: Sympathy for tribe will help casino cause"Attention, anyone alarmed by the thought of a full-scale gambling casino in Rhode Island: It wouldn't hurt to start planning strategy for getting voters to reject a ballot proposal in 2004. Senate President Bill Irons predicted yesterday that the 2004 General Assembly will approve a casino referendum. And he'll be "surprised" if the margins aren't large enough to override a veto vowed by Governor Carcieri. A House-passed bill in the 2003 session stalled in the Senate but Irons says a measure will pass the Senate -- and also the House -- in 2004. Speaking afterward with Providence Journal reporter Liz Anderson, House Speaker Bill Murphy was more circumspect. Still, no one would be surprised if Irons's scenario comes true, especially in light of sympathy for the Narragansett Indians after the smoke-shop raid." Get the Story:M.
