The Pueblo of Zuni has confirmed its first COVID-19 case. Governor Val Panteah announced the case during a radio address to the community on March 29, 2020.

“As I stated, we have one confirmed case of COVID 19 in Zuni. It makes this message ever so important. Let’s stop this virus by staying home,” Panteah said on social media on that day. He also confirmed that the patient is a tribal citizen.

The tribe has not yet closed the reservation to outsiders. But leaders are asking non-residents not to stop on the reservation if they are traveling through on New Mexico state roads.

The tribe declared a state of emergency on March 19.
