Chairman Darrell G. Seki, Sr. of the Red Lake Nation declared medical martial law on the reservation on April 1, 2020.

in a video address to the tribe, Seki cited the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Minnesota. And in an executive order he said a Red Lake citizen who lives on the reservation, but who has traveled to the community recently, tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Because the COVID-19 virus now threatens the Red Lake Nation, it is necessary that martial law now be declared,” Seki said

The tribe’s declaration requires all residents to remain in their homes and yards. Travel is only permitted to obtain food, to care for those in need, to attend medical appointments and for those “essential” employees who have to report to work.

A coronavirus test site has been set up on the reservation, outside of the Indian Health Service facility in Red Lake.
