In an update on April 13, 2020, the Pueblo of Zuni confirmed a rise in COVID-19 cases in the tribe’s region of New Mexico.

According to the data, 31 people have tested positive for the disease caused by the coronavirus. That’s a 24 percent increase from the 25 previously reported.

“The Pueblo of Zuni and Emergency Management is stressing to the community to adhere to the shelter-in-place and social distancing; understand that it takes one person to infect everyone around them,” the update reads.

The data provided by the tribe comes from the Indian Health Service unit that serves Zuni as well as the neighboring Ramah Chapter of the Navajo Nation. The communities are about 22 miles apart.

Zuni is a large pueblo of nearly 7,600, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Ramah has about 3,000 people, according to the chapter.

People from both communities travel frequently to Gallup, a nearby city that is considered a coronavirus hotspot in New Mexico.
