Ho-Chunk Nation awarded multi-million dollar funding from CARES Act

The Ho-Chunk Nation was notified on Wednesday, May 6, that it was awarded a multi-million dollar funding from the federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security) Act.

Ho-Chunk Nation Treasury Department Executive Director Crystal Deschinny was notified of the award this morning.

“We applied on April 17 to receive funds from the CARES Act and we are happy to receive word today that we were awarded the funds,” said Ho-Chunk Nation President Marlon WhiteEagle.

The CARES Act has appropriated $150 billion nationwide and is meant for state, territorial, local and tribal governments.

The requirement of the award is that expenditures are to be incurred due to the public health emergency means and that expenditures must be used for actions taken to respond to the public health emergency.

They are for second-order effects of the emergency, such as by providing economic support to those suffering from employment or business interruptions due to COVID-19-related business closures.

Funds may not be used to fill shortfalls in government revenue to cover expenditures that would not otherwise qualify under the statute.
