1. EVENTS:
THERE’S STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR #NAFOA2020
NAFOA’s Virtual Conference officially starts today! Today’s sessions begin at 1:00 pm Eastern Time. We’ll be discussing the CRA and Indian Country with the US Comptroller of the Currency Joseph Otting, followed by a discussion of the CARES Act for Tribal Governments with officials and experts. Make sure you are registered so you can take full advantage of all the conference agenda.

2. POLICY:
TRIBAL ORGANIZATIONS CALL FOR RECUSAL OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR INDIAN AFFAIRS TARA SWEENEY
In a letter last week addressed to the Department of the Treasury and Department of the Interior, several tribal organizations representing Indian Country, including NAFOA, demand that the Coronavirus Relief Fund (CFR) under the CARES Act be directly and exclusively disbursed to Tribal governments. The letter also demands the recusal of Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Tara Sweeney in response to the inclusion of Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) in emergency funding for tribes due to the pandemic. Such an inclusion, the letter states, would “be an affront to our Tribal sovereignty.”
3. RESOURCES:
“COVID-19 & INDIAN COUNTRY: EARLY SNAPSHOT REVEALS DISPROPORTIONATE ECONOMIC EXPOSURE AND UNCERTAINTY”
A survey by the Center for Indian Country Development at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis shows the coronavirus pandemic disproportionately exposes tribal economies and governments to economic hardship.
This survey analyzed the impact of social distancing and other public health measures on Indian Country labor markets and tribal governments. Learn more about the CICD’s findings.
4. EDUCATION:
REGISTRATION EXTENDED FOR CAREER BASICS
The deadline to register for NAFOA’s Career Basics program has been extended to April 30th. Career Basics is a career readiness and personal finance program designed for 18-26-year-old Native American youth and young professionals. The Spring session ends on May 31st.
The program is online and participants can proceed at their own pace. However, if you do not have a stable/consistent internet connection, please email education@nafoa.org to make arrangements and still be able to participate remotely.
