The Alaska Native Village Corporation Association (ANVCA) and the ANCSA Regional Association (ARA) is seeking a say in the CARES Act lawsuit that’s headed to a major showdown in federal court.

The ANVCA and the ARA will be filing a friend of the court brief in Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation v. Mnuchin. They plan to explain why Alaska Native corporations are eligible for shares of the $8 billion coronavirus relief fund promised to tribal governments.

“ANVCA and ARA are familiar with the treaty, jurisprudence, and legislative impacts made upon them and their member groups throughout history, including the time before ANCSA,” an April 22, 2020, court filing states. “They are the parties who will be directly and negatively affected if this Court rules in favor of Plaintiffs.”

The ANVCA and the ARA are represented by Christine V. Williams and by J. Harrison Powell, II, attorneys based in Alaska.
