President Ben Shelly will be sworn in as the leader of the Navajo Nation on Tuesday even though he did not win his re-election bid.

Shelly will remain in officer under an agreement reached with leaders of the Navajo Nation Council. An election for his successor will be held later this year.

“In order to maintain the structure and integrity of the Navajo Nation government the Executive Branch and Legislative Branch have talked things out and reached an agreement regarding the Office of the President,” the agreement states.

The primary will take place June 2. All of the candidates in last year's election are eligible to run without paying another filing fee.

The top two candidates will advance to the August 4 general election.
