The gaming company backing the Nipmuc Nation's bid for federal recognition is looking for casino sites throughout New England.
Lakes Gaming Inc. released a report several months ago that listed Rhode Island and New Hampshire and possible sites. The company is already considering land on the Massachusetts/Connecticut border.
Lakes Gaming is owned by a former business partner of Bureau of Indian Affairs head Dave Anderson, who said he would recuse himself from any decisions affecting the company.
The Nipmuc Nation's federal recognition petition is pending before the BIA. Former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb issued a preliminary decision against recognition in September 2001.
