The chairman of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma says a gaming compact bill that passed the State Senate by 30-18 vote on Wednesday would hurt tribes.
Chairman John "Rocky" Barrett is already displeased with the practices of the casino industry. He scoffs at gaming manufacturers who charge high lease fees for casino machines.
The situation will only get worse if the compact is approved, he says. He believes the bill benefits only a few gaming manufacturers at the exclusion of others. He also think a provision affecting newly acquired lands will allow another tribe to open a casino within his jurisdiction. Tribal and state officials dispute Barrett's interpretation.
The Daily Oklahoman is running a series on all the tribes in the state. The Citizen Potawatomi Nation is the first to receive a profile.
