Casino Stalker
Editorial: Vote on Mississippi Choctaw casino

$stalker "Jackson County residents will get a chance tonight to learn about a proposed casino on 100 acres at Miss. 57 and I-10.

The Mississippi Band of Choctaws plan a public hearing from 7 to10 p.m. today at the Ocean Springs Civic Center on Bienville Boulevard.

The hearing is held in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

This is a chance for opponents and supporters to learn about the project, ask questions and maybe voice their opinion.

The decision on the casino project should rest with Jackson County residents. In the past the Choctaws have pledged to abide by a county referendum.

One thing Jackson County residents must do is guard against outside interests making the casino decision for them. Harrison and Hancock interests shouldn't dictate what happens here. The tribe ought to abide by a vote here, if this comes to a referendum. And, the governor should heed the will of the majority, if that vote occurs."
