Puyallup Tribe defends casino sick policy

The Puyallup Tribe of Washington says it doesn't force employees at Emerald Queen Casino to work if they are sick.

Employees who call in sick on busy days can be penalized if they abuse the system, the casino manager said. But employees whose absences are excused through the tribe's health are provider, or by a doctor, aren't affected.

"It is ridiculous to think the casino would demand employees to show up to work sick,” manager Frank Wright told The Tacoma Weekly. "Our block-day policy is a mechanism simply to deal with staff that may abuse unexcused absences.”

The tribe has offered free flu shots to employees in light of concerns about H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.
