Jemez Pueblo hopeful for second review of off-reservation casino

Jemez Pueblo hopes the Obama administration will approve its plan for an off-reservation casino in southern New Mexico.

The tribe wants to build a casino in Anthony, near the Texas border. The site is more than 300 miles from the reservation, where economic opportunities are few.

"Our revenue streams are almost nothing. Tourism is dead," Gov. Joshua Madalena told The El Paso Times.

The tribe is proceeding under the two-part determination two-part determination section of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The process requires approval by the Bureau of Indian Affairs as well as concurrence by the state governor.

The Mescalero Apache Nation, which operates a casino on its reservation in southern New Mexico, and a non-Indian racetrack oppose the Jemez project.
