Tohono O'odham Nation set to offer maximum machines at casino

The Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona will likely offer the maximum number of slot machines at its proposed off-reservation casino, the tribe's gaming attorney said.

Under the Class III compact, tribes can install up to 1,089 slot machines at a single casino. But the compact also imposes a cap on the total number of machines a tribe can offer.

In this case, the Tohono O'odham Nation can offer a maximum of 2,686 machines at up to four facilities. The tribe already operates three casinos with 2,055 machines in play.

"The market will clearly bear the maximum number of gaming devices, so we'd be likely to put the maximum in there, which would be 1,089," Dan Quigley, the general counsel for the tribe's gaming enterprise, told The Tucson Sentinel of the proposed off-reservation casino.

Quigley said the tribe will shift some of the machines from its other facilities to the new one, if it ever gains federal approval and survives litigation. The city of Glendale and the Gila River Indian Community are trying to block the Bureau of Indian Affairs from acquiring the gaming site in trust.
