The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe is preparing for a trial in its gaming compact lawsuit against the state of South Dakota.

The tribe asked former governor Mike Rounds (R) to renegotiate the Class III gaming compact. The tribe wants to expand beyond the 250-slot machine limit in the agreement.

Rounds refused to come to the table, prompting the tribe to file a lawsuit in federal court that accuses the state of acting in bad faith. The trial is set to begin on July 11.

"We would like to be able to expand our gaming industry," Chairman Tony Reider said at a roundtable on gaming hosted by The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

A casino has just opened across the border in Iowa.
