The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin is closer to a decision on its off-reservation casino, Chairman Craig Corn said.
Corn told The Kenosha Gazette that the Midwest regional office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's application. A decision from the central office in Washington, D.C,. could come by January 1, 2013.
“We’ve never been this far before, and we’re quite optimistic,” Corn told the paper.
If the BIA approves the casino,
Gov. Scott Walker (R) will have veto authority under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
He hasn't stated his position on the matter.
The tribe wants to convert an old race track in Kenosha into a casino.
The site, about 200 miles from the reservation, is in the district of Rep. Paul Ryan
(R-Wisconsin), the former Republican vice presidential candidate.
The BIA has issued a final
environmental impact
statement for the project.
