The Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma is still working on a land-into-trust application for a newly acquired site in Kansas but gaming isn't on the agenda. The tribe recently purchased 87 acres near Lawrence. Chief Paula Pechonick said the application will state that the land will be used for "non-gaming" purposes. "The trust status will allow the tribe to exercise sovereignty at the property, which will result in jobs and services in the surrounding community and result in benefit tribal members and other Native Americans," Pechonick said in the October 2013 issue of the Delaware Indian News. Once the land is placed in trust, it's possible the tribe could seek gaming further down the road. But the tribe would have to meet the requirements of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which places limits on gaming on land acquired after 1988. Get the Story:
