Group gathers signatures for referendum on North Fork casino

Stand Up for California continues to gather signatures in its campaign against an off-reservation casino for the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians.

The group must collect 504,760 signatures by October 1 in order to qualify for the 2014 ballot. Then it must convince voters to reject the bill that ratified the Class III gaming compact for the casino.

"We have never allowed slot machines off the reservations. If we're going to start doing that, then we need a vote of the public," Cheryl Schmit, the director of the group, told KSFN-TV.

The tribe's gaming site is about 35 miles from its headquarters.
