Lumbee Tribe's recognition bill includes prohibition on gaming

A bill to extend federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina includes a prohibition on gaming and that's how leaders and members want it.

"There's other things we could be looking forward to, instead of a casino, which would make the situation, I think, worse than it is right now," Pearlean Revels, a tribal council member, told WRAL.

"I know it's revenue. It'll increase revenue, but you're going to bring other problems, too," added Linda Jones, a tribal member. "So, why add to the problems we already have?"

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a federally recognized tribe, operates a casino in the western part of the state. The Lumbees are in the eastern part.

The Catawba Nation of North Carolina is seeking to open a casino in Cleveland County in South Carolina. Lumbee headquarters are more than 140 miles away.
