Caesars Entertainment is opening a $442 million casino in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland, tonight.

The Horseshoe Baltimore is the fifth casino in the state. It's not the largest but it's the first inside an urban area.

The largest casino in the state is Maryland Live, just 12 miles south of Baltimore. But that will be eclipsed by the $950 million facility being built by MGM Resorts International at the National Harbor, a hotel, convention and entertainment complex that's less than 10 miles from the U.S. Capitol.

The MGM casino is expected to open in 2016. It will help propel gaming revenues in Maryland to the $1 billion mark, just a few years after the first slot machine parlor opened in 2010.

Maryland is home to several tribes with state recognition. None have been granted federal recognition so they can't engage in gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
