Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico is investing gaming revenues in the education of its young tribal members.

The tribe sets aside $1.5 million a year for scholarships and tuition programs. The money enables students to further their education without worry of debt or other financial pressures.

“I could really focus on school,” Nicholas Latterell, 25, a tribal member who is now in graduate school, told The Santa Fe New Mexican. “And being able to graduate without debt was huge.”

According to the tribe, 85 percent of its members graduate from high school, up from 50 percent a decade ago. Since 2006, 44 have earned college degrees -- a significant number for a tribe with less than 500 members.
