Michael Two Horses, an outspoken advocate for treaty rights, died unexpectedly late last month at his home in Virginia. He was 50.
Two Horses, Sicangu Lakota/Crow Creek Dakota from South Dakota, was a visiting professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was active in civil rights at the university, serving as a charter member of the Virginia Tech Commission on Equal Opportunity and Diversity.
Two Horses was also known as the founder of the Coalition to End Race-based Targeting of American Indian Nations (CERTAIN). The group served as an ally to the Makah Nation of Washington, which has been criticized for exercising its treaty right to hunt whale. Two Horses educated others on the tribe's position and countered opponents to the hunt.
