BIA loan finances purchase of convenience store

The Santee Sioux Tribe used a Bureau of Indian Affairs loan guarantee to purchase a convenience store for about $500,000.

The tribe sees the store as a way to bring in revenues. Chairman Roger Trudell said funds are needed to offset cuts in the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service budgets.

The store is not located on trust land. The tribe is considering placing it into trust, said Trudell.
