Several hundred northern New Mexico residents are organizing to oppose a proposed settlement to a tribal water rights lawsuit.

The Pojoaque Basin Water Alliance says water users were kept out of the dark about the deal. The group is questioning a provision that calls for non-Indians to give up their water wells and join a regional water system.

The long-running Aamodt suit, named for the first defendant, involves the water rights of the pueblos of Pojoaque, Tesuque, Namb and San Ildefonso. Under the settlement, the tribes would give up their right to assert priority over other users.
