HHS says 41 million Americans at risk for diabetes

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said on Wednesday that 41 million Americans are at risk for developing full-blown diabetes, more than twice previously thought.

Doctors have changed the criteria for a condition called pre-diabetes. They have found that more Americans have blood sugar levels low enough to be at risk for the disease.

Currently, 18 million Americans have diabetes. American Indians and Alaska Natives suffer from the disease at significantly higher rates than the rest of the population.
