Survey finds Navajos prefer sheep over money

A majority of Navajos would prefer a sheep rather than $75, according to a survey conducted by college students in New Mexico.

The students asked 128 Navajos about their attitudes towards money and a $500 million bond proposed by Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley. A majority (65 percent) said the tribe wasn't ready to borrow such a large amount of money. About half (50 percent) didn't trust tribal leaders enough to handle money.

Shirley proposed the bonds as a way to stimulate economic development on the reservation. He believes most Navajos support the deal.
