Tribal coalition seeks to protect important sites

A consortium of four California tribes is working to protect and preserve important sites.

The Native American Land Conservancy's latest project is the creation of the 2,500-acre Old Woman Mountains Preserve. The land is home to pictographs and petroglyphs that the Chemehuevi and Mojave tribes consider sacred.

The conservancy is also working to preserve about 3,600 acres near the Salton Sea. The Cahuilla tribes used the area to fish.

The Twentynine Palms Band of Mission Indians is one of the founding members of the group. The tribe obtained funding for the non-profit coalition.
