Senate, House committee hearings this week


The Senate Indian Affairs Committee and the House Resources Committee are holding three Indian-related hearings this week.

On Tuesday, the Senate committee will hold a hearing on S. 2436, the "Native American Programs Act Reauthorization. The bill extends several American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian financial assistance, training and training assistance programs that were first passed in 1974 and later amended in subsequent years.

On Wednesday, the Senate committee will hold an oversight hearing on the No Child Left Behind Act and its impact on Indian education. Assistant secretary Dave Anderson is expected to testify.

Also on Wednesday, the House committee will hold a hearing on two land claim bills affecting Michigan tribes. H.R. 831 would settle a claim on behalf of the Bay Mills Indian Community while H.R. 2793 would settle a claim on behalf of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
