Herseth seeks visibility on Indian issues

Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-South Dakota), whose election depended on the turnout of Indian voters, has been seated on the House Resources Committee, the panel with jurisdiction over Indian affairs.

Herseth said she will focus on issues affecting nine tribes in the state. She issued a press release last week promoting increased funding for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service although she didn't work on the bill.

Herseth, a new member of the Veterans Affairs and Agricultural committees, is also joining the Congressional Native American Caucus.
