IHS dentist may have sold Native patients' teeth

An Indian Health Service dentist in Arizona is under investigation for possibly selling the teeth of Native patients.

Sanders Steinman, an oral surgeon at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center since 1995, was found shipping teeth to an unidentified European institution, The Arizona Republic reported. He has been placed on desk duty while IHS conducts an investigation.

IHS says some hospitals sell the extracted teeth of patients for educational purposes. Tribal representatives said doing so would violate tribal culture.
