Cherokee Nation awaits approval of constitution


The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is waiting federal approval of changes to the tribal constitution that were adopted in 2003.

The tribe voted to remove a provision that requires the Bureau of Indian Affairs to approve every changes to the constitution. Many tribal constitutions have a similar provision.

The tribe also voted to create a delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. Treaties with the U.S. allow a Cherokee delegate, according to the new constitution.
