Puyallup Tribe tracking salmon with microchips

The Puyallup Tribe of Washington is turning to technology to track salmon in the Puyallup River.

With a $50,000 federal grant, the tribe hired biologists to implant microchips in young salmon. About 1,500 fish were tagged.

The tribe is using the tags to gain insight into the behaviors of fish along a six-mile stretch of the river. The results may be used to justify how the tribe sets water quality standards in the river.
