High school curriculum to help Alaska Native students

The Sealaska Heritage Institute is developing a high school curriculum to help Alaska Natives pass the state's high school exit exam and get ready for college.

The curriculum will have a focus on Native culture. Funded by a federal grant, it will be tested in Juneau and then expanded to other cities.

Nearly half of Alaska Native high school students fail the exit exam. But among those who have participated in a Native-oriented program in Anchorage, the passing rate has soared to 95 percent.
